S4’s Charity Foundation Committee (CFC) was founded to help further S4’s involvement within the Nelson Mandela Bay. With the success of the CFC’s 5km Fun Walk, members of the committee wanted to spread the Christmas spirit.
As older people age, they have different health and care needs in comparison to the young. South Africa’s elder care policy places strong emphasis on ageing in communities rather than institutional environments. The current government funding model is inadequate and when there is a shortfall the true costs of providing services and care to elderly citizens comes to light.
Huis Genot, a home for older persons, was chosen by the CFC as the needs of the elderly is just as important as the needs of the young. Huis Genot is based in Algoa Park, Port Elizabeth and the older persons home takes care of 111 people currently. They provide 24-hour care and support, rehabilitation, recreational creativity development and more.
“It is really great to see how the S4 staff came together for this donation drive. We had a Christmas donation box set-up in our reception area and everyday a staff member would bring donations,” says Kayla Schoeman, member of the CFC.
